An-Xileel is (as previously mentioned) enigmatic to the rest of Tamriel, and there is very little canon relating to it. Here is what I know, or believe I know.

-Holes-In-Head

--------------------------------------

"An-Xileel" translates directly to "Our Home."

However, as with most efforts to translate Jel, the direct translation misses the interesting connotations, both from vocabulary and attitudinal modifiers (e.g. "I erect the spine of…") Though Jel doesn't have a strong sense of past or future, the term "An-Xileel" carries the strongest possible connotations of reverence and persistence within the flow of time -- to a degree usually only applied to entities like the Hist.

Therefore, "Our homeland, always" is as close a translation as one can achieve in Cyrodiilic.

(A note to human or meric readers: though this account is translated into Cyrodiilic, it retains some features of Jel -- mainly that things tend to happen in the present tense regardless of whether they occur in the "past" or "future" relative to this telling.)

Q: Doesn't An-Xileel not exist until the Third Age?
A: Black Marsh is large and holds many secrets. Is it realistic to think that the only political and military entity with the power to fight Daedra on their own plane comes into existence, from nothing, at that specific bend in the river of time? (The absurdity of the analogy shows how nonsensical such a statement would be in Jel.)

An-Xileel exists long before the Third Age. We just do not feel it necessary, or prudent, to announce ourselves to the rest of the world as a political or military entity before that time -- and when many humanoids already view the Saxhleel as barely-intelligent savages, it is easy for them to write off the impenetrability of Black Marsh purely as a consequence of sickness, difficult terrain, and hostile natives.

That being said, the Saxhleel are not united by An-Xileel until the Oblivion Crisis, during which we are abandoned by the Empire to fight the Daedra ourselves. Upstream of that bend in the river of time, our numbers and influence are more limited.

It is instructive to recall that, unlike men and mer, the Saxhleel differ not only in culture and tradition, but in physical form. Also, given the relative paucity of large-scale intrusions into Black Marsh, especially the interior, and the disinclination of most Saxhleel to travel elsewhere, it takes long and long for the more isolated tribes and cultures to broaden their concepts of "us" and "homeland" beyond their own single tribe and Hist tree -- and to understand that men and mer are a greater threat than other Saxhleel. For instance, slave raids take place for many years with the assistance of the Archeins.

Q: How does An-Xileel come into existence?
A: It is said that "An-Xileel!" begins as the battle cry of a single Saxhleel as his village fights a party of slave raiders. Its unexpected resonance leads many Saxhleel who hear it to adopt it themselves. Over time, the concept ("Our homeland, always") begins to unite some of us outside of battle, across tribal lines -- and, in time, to organize active resistance.

However, the one who first uses the term is far upriver in time, and as such, the details are lost. An-Xileel as an organized entity likely dates to late in the First Era, sometime after the Saxhleel are defeated in the Battle of Argonia and organized enslavement of the Saxhleel begins.

Such enlightenment is refreshing! Sun on the marsh, this post. Very delightful!

I would also like to add some information on our kin, if one would be permitted to do so?

All marsh-kin are encouraged to share the fruits of their knowledge: what you know, believe, or suspect to be true.

As guild historian, I reserve the right to decide what becomes official guild lore -- though everyone is free to believe what they like!
